A companion volume to their massive bibliography Studies in Mormon History, 1830-1997, this descriptive history by a team of top Mormon scholars provides a comprehensive view of how the writing of Mormon history has evolved since the establishment of the church. Mormon History offers an interpretive survey of Mormon historical writings, from the partisan history of mormonism and often ephemeral history of the nineteenth century through the shift in the first half of the twentieth toward a more balanced history of mormonism and professional approach to the "new Mormon history" that has emerged since World War II. In addition to laying out Mormon historiography, the authors examine Mormon biography history of mormonism and autobiography history of mormonism and discuss social science literature on the Mormons. The History of the Saints: Or, an Expose of Joe Smith and Mormonism by John Cook Bennett, X

Calling Joseph Smith "one of the grossest history of mormonism and most infamous impostors that ever appeared upon the face of the earth", John Cook Bennett exposes a viper's nest of bitterness history of mormonism and corruption in his inflammatory History of the Saints, which appeared in 1842. Issuing dire warnings of a Mormon conspiracy to overthrow the government, Bennett catalogs the "Mormon Monster's career of imposture, iniquity, history of mormonism and treason" while presenting testimonies to his own unsullied character. Castigating the church history of mormonism and everyone associated with it, he describes the elaborate "seraglio" -- the hierarchy of females at the disposal of men of power -- history of mormonism and the Mormons' military history of mormonism and civic organization, as well as their secret societies, including the Danites, an elite group of spies history of mormonism and informers who purportedly dressed as women while engaged in their dark schemes. This same John Bennett had been Joseph Smith's assistant president history of mormonism and close confidant, as well as the mayor of the city of Nauvoo, a major general of its militia, history of mormonism and a chancellor of its university. Andrew F. Smith's introduction examines this enigmatic character, putting Bennett's disavowal of the church history of mormonism and his near-fanatical crusade into perspective. Although generally dismissed by Mormon scholars as the work either of a true believer who went astray or of an opportunist masquerading as a devout religious convert,Bennett's History did correctly report on Smith's polygamy history of mormonism and predict the rise of a Mormon theocracy, though not in the location he expected. History of the Latter Day Saint movement - The Latter Day Saint movement is a religious movement within Christian Restorationism beginning in the early 19th century that led to the set of doctrines, practices, and cultures called Mormonism and to the existence of numerous Latter Day Saint churches.
